THE DUCKTAIL

In the early 1970s, Porsche had a problem.

As the 911 became faster, its shape created increasing aerodynamic lift at speed. Porsche’s engineers began experimenting with ways to stabilize the rear of the car without fundamentally changing the unmistakable 911 silhouette.

The answer appeared on the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7.

A relatively small extension of the engine lid curved upward at the rear. Function came first, but the shape was so distinctive that it quickly acquired a nickname: the ducktail.

What began as an aerodynamic solution became one of the defining visual elements of early performance 911s.

Then it largely disappeared.

For decades, Porsche rear spoilers became larger, more technical and eventually active. But the original ducktail remained associated with a very particular period in Porsche history.

Porsche eventually returned to the idea with the modern Sport Classic—almost half a century after the Carrera RS.

That history is what interested us.

When we developed the Wicked Sport Classic Ducktail, the idea wasn’t to invent another rear wing. It was to take one of the simplest and most recognizable ideas in 911 history and interpret it for the proportions of the modern car.

Sometimes the best place to look for what’s next is something Porsche figured out 50 years ago.
